The Role of Refrigeration Oil in Refrigeration Systems

Refrigeration oil plays a core role in lubrication, sealing, cooling, and energy transfer within refrigeration systems. Primarily, it lubricates the compressor's moving parts (e.g., rotors, pistons) to minimize wear and provides internal sealing to maintain pressure differential. It also helps cool the compressor by carrying away frictional heat. Circulating throughout the system with the refrigerant, it additionally lubricates components like expansion valves.

However, oil circulation is a double-edged sword. Particularly in the evaporator, oil can separate from the refrigerant (e.g., R134a, R507) at low temperatures, depositing on heat exchange surfaces and forming an insulating oil film. This can significantly reduce heat transfer efficiency (by up to 20-30%) and may cause flow fluctuations or oil return issues, thereby impacting overall system performance and energy efficiency. Therefore, ensuring stable oil circulation and its reliable return to the compressor is critical.
