R32 Gas

The R32, or more formally R-32 (difluoromethane), is a widely used hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant. It is a single-component, colorless gas with a faint, ether-like odor, classified under the ASHRAE safety group A2L (mildly flammable but low toxicity).

As a key alternative to older refrigerants with high global warming potential (GWP), R32 has become the dominant choice for new residential and light commercial air conditioning systems globally, particularly in inverter-type split units. Its primary advantage lies in its superior environmental profile: it has zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) and a GWP of 675, which is roughly one-third that of its common predecessor, R410A. This significantly reduces its direct climate impact.

From a performance standpoint, R32 offers excellent thermodynamic properties. It provides higher energy efficiency (higher coefficient of performance - COP) compared to many alternatives, leading to lower operating costs and reduced indirect CO2 emissions from power generation. It also requires a lower refrigerant charge for the same cooling capacity and offers easier recyclability due to being a single compound. Its main operational challenge is its mild flammability, requiring specific handling procedures, certified technicians, and equipment designed for its use to ensure safety throughout the lifecycle.
